A Small Detour Due to Tropical Storm Alex

I awakened Saturday morning to the most beautiful view of steady rain falling over the Maya Mountains. The view from the screened-in verandah of Chaa Creek's Villa #15 was truly amazing. I was secretly hoping to stay there and relax for the day as Tropical Storm Alex blew through Belize. I had it all planned out too. I pictured myself sitting on the verandah with a cup of tea, a good book, enjoying the most magnificent view.

As I was packing my belongings and the rain continued, I realized that San Pedro Town was probably not going to happen today. So, the Nature and Wellness Group packed up and headed to Belmopan. If it was safe, we would continue on to San Pedro, if not, then off to Belize City. Before we even reached Belmopan, we received word that we would be heading to Belize City to the Radisson and would probably be there until the storm passed. As we reached Belmopan, we learned that we couldn't fly and would continue to drive to Belize City by van.

We wished that we could have stayed up in the mountains, but Chaa Creek had a full house. It was interesting to learn that Victoria House sends their guests to Chaa Creek on just such occasions. So, note to self, if you are at Victoria House and a tropical storm comes in, you could be transferred to Chaa Creek. It's always nice to know the evacuation plan!

By the time we arrived in Belize City, The Radisson had everything ready for us. We were checked in immediately and even got oceanfront rooms. They were nice too. Thank you, Jim! They also held a Dark n' Stormy Alex Storm Chaser Party for us in the evening. We were so appreciative to the Radisson for taking wonderful care of us on such short notice. We took the opportunity to relax and catch up on email.

The wind and rain were pretty strong late in the evening and howled just a bit. I read the next day that the winds got up to about 60mph. I want you to know that I was ready to report. I had my video camera ready and if things got a little crazy, I was going to man the camera while Phil held on to a tree or pole like Geraldo Rivera. We were going to be on Fox News for sure! Fortunately for everyone, it didn't come to that.

We were well taken care of but very disappointed that we didn't make it to San Pedro. Several others in our group were staying longer to include it in their trip. Phil and I weren't able to stay later this year. So, SP, we'll catch you next trip.
